Can you compare tomatoes to potatoes? It is challenging to understand a person by another person’s life experiences. Which, I believe, is absolutely right! We cannot know entirely a person in a lifetime. And no person, mind you, how close to you, will ever be entirely honest about their internal thoughts. Just like we all are born at different times, we all go through different experiences throughout our lifetime. Therefore, our mental health, the product of these experiences is also uniquely developed.

What do you need?

“Sar dard hai? Crocin or Anacin?” “Pet dard hai? Pudin Hara or Allopathic medicine? See, even physical discomforts can be challenging to understand without understanding how they were developed. How easy do you think it’s going to be, to understand mental pains? Mental health ka toh kisi ko matlab hi nahi pata, toh takleef ka illaj kaise karenge?

Hence, I always suggest that you need to talk to the same person everyday differently because every day the same person is a new person. So everyday a new medicine to the same person as well.

What has happened?

To know what the “takleef ka illaj”, you need to know “kya hua hai tumhe”. I have a migraine problem, my mom and my brother also have a migraine. But we do not get relief from one kind of medicine. We may take one type of medicine, but then, the dosage of the drug differs. In the same way, different people, with the same mental discomforts, need to be addressed differently.

Similar situations, different reactions!

Like we all describe the same kind of food made by the same person differently. In the same manner, we also react to similar situations, to the same problem differently. And, this is because of the kind of environment we have been living in. What we learn, our capacity to unlearn, our memory and our forgetfulness!

It’s not generic!

When I come across self-help books or videos on social media, I feel they are quite generic in nature, which is fair enough. The problem lies with the generalization of the problem. Your mental state is unique, just because you have a unique mind.

These resources being generalistic in nature, often are of only a little help for ameliorating your state. The good part, however, is that you realize that though your mind is unique, your discomforts are not. But, the solution to that discomfort can be unique, again! However, merely understanding it may not be enough. You need to know what’s suitable to relieve your troubles.

Understanding what provides relief

We often forget that resources on social media are to help us to realize that we need and may not finally solve the issue. When we take coaching or therapy from a mental health professional or a neurologist, or psychiatrist, we need to be honest, just like we are with a doctor. It’s like you going to a physician and asking him to give you medicine without telling him how you fell ill in the first place, or what were your past actions/experiences that may have led to this.

Successful therapy can stem from courage and honesty while reporting one’s experiences. It can be possible that you might already know why you are a victim of a particular situation. And that’s the best part, to know it, precisely!
